The Y. A. G. Laser Examination Microscope

Keith Mckenzie is a retired ophthalmologist that practiced in Santa Cruz for 30 years. He was inspired to start an Eye project in Guatemala by Sister Mary Waddell, in her village of Santo Tomas, 12 years ago. Due to increasing demand for eye care among the indigenous people that they serve, an equipment upgrade was needed to make the program more efficient, and thus provide more, and better quality care.

A partnership of Santa Cruz Lions, and Santa Cruz Rotary have donated 4,000 each to purchase a combination YAG laser / examination microscope. This device was used on the February 2009 trip, and was found to be perfect for their needs.

Norman Bedell presents Dr. Mckenzie with a check for $4000.00 on behalf of the Santa Cruz Host Lions Club. These funds have been used to purchase the YAG laser / examination microscope. It is used to treat the indigenous people in Guatemala by removing cataracts.
